The Champions Meeting

The Champions Meeting will take place on Saturday 17th October and will be Britain’s classiest race day of the season with no less than six Group races and of course the second half of the Autumn double, the Cesarewitch.

The Group Ones come in the form of the Dewhurst Stakes for two year old colts; the winner of this race is often installed almost immediately as the favourite for the following season’s 2000 Guineas. The second Group One is of course the Champion Stakes itself.

The Dewhurst is worth £275,000 and for the last three years it has been by horses trained by the great Irish trainer, Jim Bolger who have won. In 2006 Teofilo won and then in 2007 it was won by New Approach who went off as favourite and came second in the 2000 Guineas but who then went on to win the Epsom Derby. Last year the race was won by Intense Focus, who surprisingly is not considered amongst the favourites for 2000 Guineas in 2009 although he does carry an entry.

The Champion Stakes is a race that dates back to 1877 and is one of the most significant and prestigious Group One races available. It always attracts a top quality field and is always a terrific race. Horses of the stature of the legendary Brigadier Gerard have won this race; he in fact won it twice in 1971/2. Other famous winners include, Sir Ivor, Pebbles, Triptych, In the Groove and perhaps more recently Alborada. See Newmarket legends for more.

Finally The Cesarewitch which dates back to 1839 is one of the greatest handicap races in flat racing anywhere. Run over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs, the race is named in honour of a Russian Crown Prince who visited Newmarket at that time. Not many people realise that Cesarewitch starts in Cambridgeshire and finishes in Suffolk and is the only horse race in existence that can claim this. The Cesarewitch completes the Autumn double, the first leg being the Cambridgeshire which is run two weeks earlier at the Cambridgeshire meeting.
